How’s Your Couch (#coach) Treating You?

By Joe Schum / February 20, 2020 /

Yep, I’m calling you out!  You, you know who you are — the one who said this year will be different from last year.  That you were going to show up bigger, better and brighter than before. And, that was 2019.  Tick tock, tick tock. Newsflash, it’s 2020. How did it all work out for you? What does this year look like now that you accomplished all that shifting and changing and getting unstuck? Or, is the needle dropping on yet another broken record?  (for those that remember LPs and turntables). And the important question, what are you doing about…

The Light and The Dark

By Joe Schum / January 14, 2020 /

As January 1st became January 2nd, the barrage of New Year’s perspectives, prognostications and prose started to hit the blogosphere.  I was prepared for the same, polishing my start line piece with all kinds of reasons why one must invest in themselves to experience real growth. Maybe get a coach! And then something happened a week prior (yep, I just went backwards!)  to the big 2020 blog debut that shifted me to bring an experience that for all its worth, taught me an amazing lesson. It was the Friday before New Year’s Eve and my wife and I decided that…

#grateful Expectations

By Joe Schum / December 3, 2019 /

55 mins 05 secs later, I crossed the finish line.  Yep, that’s the result of my latest race (10K) and first official one as a resident of the Tampa Bay area.  Now, let’s review the journey that gets me there. This one is about being #grateful!   What a year it’s been and here’s what I’m #grateful about: Being closer to my family: physically, emotionally, spiritually.  Every. Day. Living in paradise.  Every. Day. Working in a “Boss-Free” environment.  Every. Day. Being connected to my clients: corporate and individual. Every. Day. Doing what I want, when I want, with whom I…

Follow You, Follow Me

By Joe Schum / November 5, 2019 /

A simple idea — that managed to escape me as I jogged along a paved trail at the beach not far from my house these last many months — suddenly appeared: to run ON the beach… I know many of you are saying to yourselves, why isn’t he running on the beach?  As I rounded the corner from the beachside road and entered the trail, ahead of me an older runner (to clarify: much older than me) was running on the sand next to the trail, on a beach access lane used by city vehicles, lifeguards and other beach vendors. …

I (Heart) Breakfast

By Joe Schum / October 1, 2019 /

I just read an article referencing an interview with the CEO of an extremely large investment house.  According to the article, this leader takes everyone who is in the final stage of the interview process out to breakfast.  Here’s the punchline: he co-opts the server — in exchange for a big tip — to tank the interviewee’s order to see how they react to the problem with their meal.  Wow, where do I start? Firstly, what a way to begin a relationship — with subterfuge.  He states that he does this to see how the candidate conducts themselves from the…

My French Connection

By Joe Schum / September 9, 2019 /

On a recent business trip, I did not rent a car and instead used a popular rideshare app to get me from point A to point B.  So, so what Joe? We all do it. Well, something you may not know is that I’ve been studying French for three years, with a goal to be fluent before I leave the planet.  So the universe showed up for me and gave me a French (a Parisian!) speaking driver for my ride from the airport!   I was really excited to hear her accent and ask her in French where she was from. …

Don’t You Dare!

By Joe Schum / July 31, 2019 /

I overheard an accomplished sales professional on a phone conversation recently ask for help.  They were extolling the difficulties of working with a particular individual at one of their accounts who 1) had a conniption when he heard that they had attempted to reach out to others in the organization, and 2) declared that he is the gatekeeper to everything and “don’t ever go around me again!”  Sound familiar? Now, if you’re this sales professional, how many are already scratching this account from their 2019 pipeline?  How many will continue to work (in servitude) with this person without ever actually…

Let’s Do The Time Warp Again – challenges in the competition of conversation

By sphippo / July 2, 2019 /

I just spent an entire weekend with a group of men who all have two connections: 1) we are all fellow college alumni. 2) we all worked on staff at a particular dorm between the years 1980-1986. We are the Lynch (Hall) Mob. On the flight home, I came across a quote that reminded me how uncanny it is that the universe can constantly provide inspiration for us while creating ways to share important moments and serve each other with examples of how we can be better with each other. ‘Ponder for a long time whether you shall admit a…

Notre Dame is Burning

By sphippo / June 10, 2019 /
notre dame burning

The headline alone is enough to make your heart skip a beat.  We all saw the pictures, the videos, heard the comments, read the stories.  Even for folks like me who are no longer obsessed with news sites, it was a hard event to miss.  Notre Dame burned. The iconic symbol of the Catholic church and the city of Paris, one of the great churches of the world, caught fire and from what we understood by those telling us the story — it would never be on the skyline again. Gone were the unique spires, the recognizable roofline, the countless…

Two Weeks Notice: Small changes to make new habits

By sphippo / May 3, 2019 /

One of the ways I challenge clients to adopt change is to have them set intentional time in their day to practice that particular new behavior or desire.  And — little drum roll, please — I ask them to commit to it for just two weeks to start. Does it resonate? Try it for two weeks. That seems really hard! Try it for just two weeks. Are you eating the elephant all at once?  No, just small bites of your challenge for just two weeks. That’s 14 days — at however many times per day we have agreed to ˆ…
